I'm really, really sick and tired of all this. Argh. I need to sort out my life now.

Goodbye, world.

Monday, August 18, 2008 ; Procrastinators: Leaders of Tomorrow

I slept at 7am earlier this morning after a night of heavy reading and was greeted by skies tinted with hues of faint orange and little wisps of lazy white clouds - they positively looked like skies out from Taiyou no Uta, which features the prettiest shots of the sky (the only other movie with equally, if not better, shots would have to be Koizora, in my extremely myopic only-watch-Japanese-shows opinion). Come to think of it, I havent actually put in such late hours since I graduated from JC, not even to have drama/movie marathons simply because I was too tired to do so due to work.

Anyway, my resolve to be more productive crumbled like a pack of cards placed haphazardly in a gravity-defying formation once again - I cant seem to get my groove back. The momentum to really rush and read voraciously isnt there; I'm most definitely still living in the holidays that are long gone. I spent the night before lapping up every moment of the Olympics: I watched the Women's Team Table Tennis Finals (China v S'pore), game highlights and the Women's Rhythemic Gymnastics Finals. Then today, my slacky self has done nothing but:
(1) Watch random snippets of the Olympics track & field events
(2) Watch random snippets of the Olympics Men's Team Table Tennis bronze playoffs
(3) Discuss group project for Financial Management module with team (yay, schoolwork)
(4) Watch competition videos featuring Guo Yue, the current world number 2 who represents China (her technique is superb!)
(5) Read random Japanese stuff
(6) Listen to music
(7) Download lecture notes/corresponding tutorials for tomorrow's lectures (not much work, but still, school-related!)

Speaking of which, I have to print my notes, or else it would be useless even if I did download them. Argh.

I'm such a slacker.

[start Olympics blabber]
- I'm glad that S'pore managed to make their date with China the longest ever that China has ever had in the whole course of their Olympic quest for gold. The matches were pretty exciting, and some of the rallies that Li Jia Wei exchanged with Zhang Yining (who is really a genius) were the best that I've ever seen.
- It was a pity that we didnt manage to stretch it past the 3rd match, and that Guo Yue didnt get a chance to showcase her powress as a singles player (she was down for the 4th match, which would have been a singles match against Wang Yue Gu). I would really have loved to see Guo Yue play in singles because she is a brilliant singles player - her explosive style of play and strategy would have made for good drama.
- The combination of Zhang Yining and Guo Yue in the doubles was amazing - their skills really placed them at the top. <3<3
- I felt that team Singapore staged a good fight too - witness Li's heart-stopping rallies with Zhang, Feng Tian Wei's close match with Wang Nan, and the two doubles pairs (Li with Wang Yue Gu; Zhang with Guo Yue) attempt to outsmart each other. Yay for Singapore; while we never really came close to twarting China's shot at gold, we didnt hand them the gold on a silver platter either. :)
- Micheal Phelps and his 8 golds, 7 world records and one Olympic record! Those, plus his exciting victory in the 4 x 100m medley relay. Enough said. :D :D
- Nastia Liukin (USA) truly does very beautiful gymnastics; her pirouettes, her graceful splits in the air, her clean and precise executions of her routine was mesmerizing. Now I know why they say she's a face to watch.
- Liu Xiang (Chn) hurt his tendon and withdrew from his pet event. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing this thorpedo race past the hurdles. But I think while onlookers are merely disappointed, he must have been devastated to see his chance at Olympic glory on home soil dashed. Ouch.
- Japan lost out to S. Korea for the bronze for the women's table tennis team event. Heartbreak. (I wanted Fukuhara Ai and her team to at least get a bronze!)

Friday, August 15, 2008 ;

Life has been nothing but a flurry of colours the past two weeks - of classrooms, stuffy lecture theatres, cramped seminar rooms, and expensive textbooks. I'm still stuck in the transition stage, where everything feels surreal, and I feel like I'm looking down at all the happenings from a vantage point. Needless to say, I havent gotten into the swing of mugging and rushing out my work; I'm still feeling pretty relaxed although the work load has gotten rather heavy indeed.

I guess my transition into university life has been made alot less rocky because of the people there - most are generally friendly and not adverse to making friends, so I managed to make a few friends (who are now my current group mates for some projects) on my very first day at school! I'm quite happy that some of my other friends are in the same university as well; it's always easier to cope with drastic changes when you have people to discuss it with/complain to, haha. That said, I'm still getting lost in the campus, which is quite a bad thing because I spend so much time trying to find my way out!

Currently, the non-academic aspect of my university life lies in a chaotic heap of convoluted options - I havent decided on my CCA, am still trying to navigate through the various forms, my matriculation card is still lying in the student affairs' office, I cant decide whether to go for an exchange programme, have no idea how to use the finance monitoring programs in the library, have no idea how to configure the wireless campus network on my laptop etc. On the other hand, I'm glad that my faculty stuffed my timetable with core modules because the lack of available academic units for prescribed electives/unrestricted electives saved me from the agony of fighting for my desired module and rearranging my timetable.

I'm on a four-day week, with a free day on Monday, so I must say that I'm quite satisfied with my timetable (I'm lucky for once! I've never been lucky with stuff that are generated at random, haha). The only gripe I have with my timetable is the schedules for Wednesday and Thursday: classes start at 0830 hrs for me, which means that I have to wake up at an unbelievably early hour; the earliest in my entire schooling life. Otherwise, I'm quite glad that I get a long weekend (3 days of rest!) as opposed to having my free day stuck in the middle of the school week.

On a random note, I cant seem to feel the Olympics buzz this year although the Beijing Olympics has been nothing short of phenomenal! The opening ceremony was an extremely grand and impressive affair; I was particularly impressed with the young talents featured in the ceremony - the young child suspended in the air with a giant kite, the little girl with the big powerful voice etc. Sadly, what would have been a perfect ceremony was marred by the lip-synching scandal involving 'the little girl with the big powerful voice'. The sportsmen involved in the various sports have produced amazing results; their events never fail to keep me riveted to the television. This is especially so for swimming: watching Micheal Phelps swim leaves me wondering how far the human limit can go; Kitajima Kousuke's calmness in a race intrigues me; close finishes excite me to no end.

Sadly, I couldnt catch the Singapore women's Table Tennis team in their semi-finals against South Korea earlier today - they started the game at 1430hrs, and my schedule was packed all the way to 1630hrs and beyond due to schoolwork. Eventually I settled for the next best alternative, which was to keep track of the scores via the live tracking device provided at the offical website. Although I couldnt see the rallies that went on between the players from both sides, observing the scores gave me a mini adrenalin rush as well. It would have been dreadful to see history repeat itself (Singapore has had a history of slipping at pivotal points in the Olympics) because team Singapore had started off on a high note and was in good stead to book a place in the finals. That dread gradually increased as the South Korean team drew in terms of matches won with us, and for a moment it felt like history was really going to repeat itself as Feng Tian Wei lost the third set to Park Mi-Young (S.Korea) after winning the first two sets of the decisive fifth game in the semi-finals. If anyone remembers, Singapore's hopes for an Olympic medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics came to nought when Li Jiawei lost the remaining three sets of the women singles semi-finals after comfortably winning the first two - at that time, Feng Tian Wei was in the same position, and I this nagging feeling that this curse might continue to dog us. But! it was not to be! Feng Tian Wei eventually triumphed over the S.Koreans in the fourth set to take the game 3-1, and secure a place in the finals for team Singapore! I couldnt quite believe my eyes when I saw the results on the computer screen because it felt so surreal! Singapore is guaranteed at least a Silver medal! The national flag will be hoisted up come the awards ceremony; the only thing left unconfirmed being the position of that very flag, and the anthem that would accompany it has it gets hoisted up. :)

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 ; Oh, Bloody Hell!

I cannot believe that I'm reduced to blogging at work! All thanks to the annoying wireless internet connection at home that keeps disconnecting at inopportune times, or dropping to a snail's pace even though my family subscripes to a plan that promises high speed. Argh.

I swear I'm going to shift the whole modem into my room - I absolutely hate the wireless network that has been set up at home. Besides, everyone's laptop (I'm the only one in my family who chose to stick with a good old desktop) is functioning perfectly fine even with the wireless network, and I'm the only one affected, argh! All in all, I think the fault ultimately lies with the interior designer, who somehow failed to cater for cables running out of the data points in the various rooms! Somehow or rather, with the finishings used in the interior design of our new flat (I shifted a few months ago), it's almost impossible to run cables from the data points in the rooms to the data point in the living room, where the modem, which doubles up as the connection point for the phone line under my service provider's two-in-one plan, is located. Argh, heck wireless! I havent been able to indulge in drama marathons (think Nodame Cantabile! Maou! Zettai Kareshi! Prince of Tennis! Liar Game! etc) because all the streaming sites take eons to load the videos, and by extension, it means that I'm unable to download video files peacefully either. :( I desperately want to watch so many dramas before university starts (and my free time evaporates)!

I'm also feeling particularly uninspired now, having been cooped up in the office for a good part of the day. If I had a choice, I wouldnt stay in the office for extended periods of time (which invariably raises serious, career-threatening questions about how I'm ever going to survive life as an accountancy graduate in an office), but unfortunately, I've a monthly report to compile and complete. That said, I cant wait to wrap up my half-hearted report and proceed to the site to check on some of my items! (Okay which means technically I should stop rambling here and proceed to actually finish off my report, but I procrastinate.)

Life these few months has been great, of course with a few low points (or else it'd be really abnormal). I really enjoy(ed) my holiday job, haha, and am quite neutral about the start of university because it'd be back to books and pen-and-paper examinations, which I dont really fancy because they turn me into a nervous wreck, and I dont like being a nervous wreck. I've also decided not to stay in the university hostel, so that means I've set myself up for a mad rush every morning, but I think I'll survive, failing which, I'll just apply for hostel accomodation, sigh.

On an utterly random note (which I think very much characterises this entry because I've been jumping from topic to topic), I think I'll really miss the pit building when I finally leave! I cant imagine that it has 'grown' from mere columns (Dec 2007, when I started work at the site) to a building clothed in metal and glass (Jun-Jul 2008, when we had the opening ceremony)! It's pretty amazing if you think about it; all the work and man-hours put in to complete the whole building. :) I think I should grab the chance to take lots of pictures of the building in the evenings, because the skies have the nicest keleidoscope of colours then, and also because the Singapore Flyer would be lighted up as well.

And lastly, the most practical reason: I dont think I'll ever earn enough in my entire life to justify paying S$7500 (or above, due to inflation in the future) for a chance to step into the VVIP area (the room with the nicest view) just to catch a glimpse of the same scenery again.

Friday, April 11, 2008 ; The Little Things

I just had a Koizora moment: by some strange twist of fate, or alternatively in less mystifying terms, because of An Act of Carelessness, I accidentally deleted off all my contacts whose names start with 'D' and 'E' from my handphone's contact list (or rather, I'd much rather it be due to my carelessness than consider the prospect of the phone software malfunctioning, gasp!).

While it might not be a big deal (read: only two puny portions of my contact list! I dont have truckloads of friends whose names start with D and E!), this accident actually helped me clear up part of my contact list. For ages, I've been wanting to clean up my contact list by deleting the numbers that were no longer in use, and was contemplating deleting off contacts whose faces I can no longer picture, and whose names dont ring a bell - only to be stopped by the thought that I might need to contact these people in future. Thinking back, I think this line of reasoning is pretty laughable - if I cant even remember who the individual behind that name is, how could I possibly remember that I have his number should the need to contact him arise? His number will merely be languishing in my contact list, and I'll probably still have to ask around for his number, thinking that I dont have his number, and then realising in utter surprise that I am acquainted with him (after going through all the trouble). So I guess this freak accident is a blessing in disguise afterall; the silver lining being the fact that I didnt have to go through the agony of debating with myself before deleting the contact off my list.

I admit, I was shocked when I discovered that I had accidentally erased off the two parts of my contact list, and that I immediately went on panic-mode by mass calling other friends, asking them to do me a big favour by sending me the business cards of mutual friends whose names start with 'D' and 'E', but now, I'm amazingly calm about the possibility of not being able to get my original 'D' and 'E' list back (even though I've tried to cover as many bases as possible by asking people to sms me the contacts of mutual friends with names starting with 'D' and 'E' - but the occasional odd contact might probably slip through).

This is probably due to the realization that, hey, when I discovered that I had accidentally deleted off those people, some names immediately popped up in my mind - those are the people who I regularly contact, and are also those whose contacts I'll eventually be able to retrive from my sms inbox albeit with much trouble (and scrolling). As for those whose names I fail to recall even after an extended period of time...those are probably the contacts whose numbers I would have to ask around for anyway should the need to contact them arise in the future. For me, some names immediately appeared in my mind, and I naturally proceeded to retrieve their contacts from my call log and sms inbox; other names came trickling into my mind gradually, and so the numbers of these people are sitting comfortably in my memory card now.

I guess I've seen the light of the statements that Sakurai Hiroki made to Tahara Mika when he (rather) rudely deleted off her entire contact list upon picking up her misplaced handphone in the school library: 'If those people really want to talk to you, they will do so eventually'.
